What You Will Need
  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil and Erasure
  • Planning Grid or graph paper
  • Calculator (optional)

Make a List

Make a list of the things you like and dislike about the room you are working on. Would you like more counter space? A vanity? A free standing island? A breakfast nook? A pantry? Also consider the appliances you will want?. Are they built-in or free standing? What type of sink? What type of lighting?

Make notes and bring them with you when you come to Appleton.

Measure Your Room

Measure in inches. Note the location of all the appliances, plumbing, electrical outlets, light switches, windows, and doors. When measuring, include the outside or final dimensions of every item in the room. You can print out the grid we have provided for your convenience.

Where to Start

Start in one corner, select a wall (Wall 1 on grid) and measure the distance of every item on the wall from the corner. Write all measurements down. Go to the next corner and record the location of every item on Wall 2 in relationship to the corner. Continue around the room until everything is measured and recorded.

Measure the overall height of the room and the distance of electrical outlets, switches, plumbing, windows, and soffits from the floor.
